Puru Kambera Savanna in Sumba captures one of the island’s most iconic landscapes. Here, the horizon stretches infinitely, and nature reveals itself in full force, vast plains, shifting light and the majestic presence of wild horses.

Since the 19th century, this region has been a land of horse breeding. Here roam the renowned Sandalwood horses, born from the meeting of local breeds and Arabian lineages. Elegant, enduring and deeply rooted in Sumbanese culture, they embody the spirit of eastern Sumba.

To watch these horses move freely across the savanna is a rare experience. At times, they surge through golden grasses, lifting dust into a near-unreal light. At others, they graze in stillness, as if suspended in a landscape beyond time.

With the passing seasons, the savanna reveals two contrasting faces:

• In the dry season, the grasslands glow in ochre and gold, echoing the vastness of African savannas.
• In the rainy season, the vegetation grows dense and radiant, transforming the landscape into a vivid green sanctuary.

At times, this landscape hosts major cultural events like the Sandalwood Horse Parade, where riders and horses bring local traditions to life in a striking spectacle.
